Last year’s inaugural Cardiff Burn event was a blazing success but it is now struggling to keep the embers alight.

Organiser Maria Leijerstam of Multisport Wales said that applications for the triathlon were down by 50%, citing the clash with the Rugby World Cup final as the primary reason for the disappointing turnout.

This news comes despite recent triumphs for Multisport Wales, as Leijerstam points out, “we had our first Mini Burn and Swansea Burn this year which was a great success.”

The Cardiff Burn course involves a 10km run around Cardiff Bay, a 24km cycle up Caerphilly Mountain followed by a 3km kayaking session back at the Bay.

It remains to be seen whether Wales’ RWC semi-final defeat will improve attendance at the Burn.
