Caerphilly Castle invites visitors on a culinary journey back in time at specially catered medieval-style Christmas banquets for this year’s Illuminata event.

Illuminata is the annual event hosted by Caerphilly Castle which celebrates its history. From December 9-11, the five-course medieval meal will be served in the Great Hall for £30 per plate.

Rhodri Ellis Owen, Spokesperson for the Welsh Government’s historic environment service (Cadw), says, “The banquets aim to capture the atmosphere of the period, and guests will only eat food available during medieval times.”

The menus have been designed by Cadw and experienced medieval food chefs, and the meal will be served with medieval ales and meads served in traditional goblets. So-called serving wenches and jesters will be on hand to entertain.
