Wales loses a national hero

The football community is devastated after news of Gary Speed’s sudden death hits

Welsh football legend Gary Speed was found dead in his home in the outskirts of Chester yesterday morning.

A spokeswoman for the Cheshire Police confirmed that at 7.08am on Sunday, a man was found dead at an address in Huntington, Chester. The identity of the man was later confirmed to be Speed.

After an illustrious career that took him from Leeds to Sheffield United, Speed became manager of the Wales football team in December 2010.

On the Football Association of Wales website Chief Executive of the associaton, Jonathan Ford stated,’’ I, and all the football family of Wales, am devastated by the news of Gary’s passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family at this difficult time.’’

He is survived by a wife and two children. Speed was 42.
