Nearly a year after the England and Wales legalized same sex marriage, Cardiff held its very first gay wedding fair on Sunday. The event was organized by Pride Cymru, a voluntary organization working for the rights of the LGBT community in the Welsh capital.

Held at the Marriott Hotel, the event saw the participation of nearly a hundred community members and supporters along with a handful of wedding planners. The event that started from 11 am and went on for the better part of the day, was also marked by a fashion show. Members of the community as well as their families walked the ramp in bridal outfits to show their support.

Compared to other parts of the country, Cardiff has always been receptive of the community members coming out in the open, said the organizers. The gay pride march, for example, has seen an increasing support over the years- from 400 people in 2012 to nearly 2,000 this year.

“This initiative is held as a fundraiser in order to raise awareness about the rights of the community,” said Tracey Bancroft, one of the organizers of the event. Ms. Bancroft added that she hopes that the support continues and more such events can be held in the future.
