Beaujolais Nouveau celebration cancelled

Top Cardiff venue cancels Beaujolais Nouveau Day event

The Norwegian Church has cancelled its plans to celebrate Beaujolais Nouveau Day on 17 November.  One of the reasons cited for the cancellation is a lack of interest in the event.

It used to be traditional on the third Thursday of November every year, to ship across bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau from France and compete to be the first to enjoy the flavour of this fruity wine.

But nowadays, when wine merchants have pre-stocked provisions, is this celebration just a hangover from the 1980s?  Andy Baillie, Manager of Spirited Wines on St Mary’s Street believes, “The wine itself has fallen out of fashion.  The cachet has gone; it used to be a race every year to try and be the first from cellar to door.”
