The wet summer has a significant consequence for chip shop owners as the cost of the potato rises by nearly 50 per cent.
Farmers are struggling with their potato crop this season as they are found rotting in the ground. This has had a direct effect on chip shop owners. Although they are still buying the same quantity from merchants they are finding more soil in the bags and a poorer quality to cook. Andrew Milon from Pete’s Plaice explained how his merchant was debating sourcing his stock from France.
Milon is resisting increasing his prices as he says, “It is difficult, but you try and explain that to a person on the street who only has so much money.”
