Locals tackle litter with street sticker

With the help of local Labour councillor Ashley Govier and environmentalist Dave King, the Grangetown community are aiming to rid the area of its litter issues with the help of a litter sticker.

The Keep Grangetown Tidy sticker, which will soon be seen on the streets, is part of a wider scheme that may be established in the area.

Environmentalist Dave King admits the problem is not easy to deal with because of the wide variety of property types, land and inhabitants in the community.

He says “We have a very diverse community with some 75 languages spoken so a flier in Welsh and English saying when to put your rubbish out isn’t going to work.”

Mr King, who admits to being “obsessed with litter,” hopes to produce a strategy that would give the community collective ownership in tackling the root causes of the issues through education, communication and action.

The diverse range of areas that are part of the problem include the Ely and Taff river banks, the sports field on the Marl and Ferry Road nature reserve, all of which would need different approaches to litter management.

It also includes Grangemoor Park, which has been used to film parts of the Doctor Who series.

The residences also range from purpose built flats, flat conversions and houses all of which need different methods to tackle recycling.

In the long run Dave King is hoping to have a group similar to the Cardiff Rivers Group established within Grangetown. The Cardiff Rivers Group will be celebrating their 100^th event this February, so keep an eye out for that. You can do this through cardiffriversgroup.co.uk
