A high profile panel of judges has awarded the Welsh version of the Mercury Music Prize to the Super Furry Animals frontman.<\/h2>\n

The first\u00a0Welsh Music Prize<\/a>\u00a0was awarded to\u00a0Gruff Rhys<\/a>\u00a0on Friday, in a ceremony at Cardiff\u2019s Kuku Club as part of\u00a0S\u0175n Festival<\/a>\u00a02011.<\/p>\n

Winning the award for his album\u00a0Hotel Shampoo<\/em>, Rhys looked genuinely surprised as he got on stage and told the audience he hadn’t expected to win, and that everyone nominated deserved it.<\/p>\n

Nominees included\u00a0Manic Street Preachers<\/a>\u00a0and emerging artists such as\u00a0Y Niwl<\/a>. The winner was decided by a panel including NME deputy editor Mike Williams and Ashli Todd from Spillers Records.<\/p>\n

We went out in Cardiff City Centre and asked people who they would award their own Welsh Music Prize to and why?<\/p>\n
