For <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/www.francescasimmons.com\/francescasimmons\/index.html.html\">Francesca Simmons<\/a>, a classically-trained multi-instrumentalist, hers lay in the garden shed.<\/p>\n<p>To prepare for an interview at Oxfordshire-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.giffordscircus.com\/\">Gifford\u2019s Circus<\/a> in 2009, Simmons learned the musical saw \u2013 an instrument famously played by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Qr5EZXewcL4\">Marlene Dietrich<\/a> in WW2. Today, she performs music on it from Welsh folk songs like <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZCXcxeJPv7U\">Ar Hyd y Nos<\/a><\/em> to Elvis Presley\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QDsozz4Tnyc\">Love Me Tender<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/sawww.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Francesca's musical saw\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/sawww.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"312\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy saw is a little larger than a garden saw and still has its teeth\u201d, she explains.<\/p>\n<p>Drawn by a bow, like a cello, Simmons says her saw has a certain range of notes and its tone is exceptionally pure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt sounds so strange, but so natural; so mundane, but so special\u201d, she says.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are told to find an edge that stands out from the crowd.
