So what could you have done last Friday? Well obviously &#8211; go\u00a0to an Irish folk session!<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30854\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 374px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/480-pixels-2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-30854 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/480-pixels-2-374x312.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"374\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/480-pixels-2-374x312.jpeg 374w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/480-pixels-2.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 374px) 100vw, 374px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Having a wee session<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amairgin the Gael is a Welsh based Irish musical community, where people bring their talents to make beautiful music. If you can\u2019t play but \u00a0fancy having a pint whilst soaking up the atmosphere, you\u2019re welcome too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peter Soper, aged 45, helps to organise Amairgin the Gael,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Wales\u2019s only <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">branch of Comhaltas Ceolt\u00f3ir\u00ed \u00c9ireann, the largest group involved in preserving and promoting traditional Irish music. He says, &#8220;It gives people exposure to a different culture. It&#8217;s keeping the Irish music tradition alive, and it&#8217;s probably the only place in Newport where you can hear this kind of music. It&#8217;s different to anything else you can find around town, isn&#8217;t it!&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newport&#8217;s recent retail upgrade, Friar&#8217;s Walk, does offer more choices in entertainment, but nothing new culturally. There&#8217;s not a lot of musical choice,\u00a0creating a gap\u00a0for something new to appear. It&#8217;s movements like Amairgin the Gael that can help fill these gaps.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30857\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 416px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/480-pixels.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-30857 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/480-pixels-416x312.jpeg\" alt=\"Irish folk, culture\" width=\"416\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/480-pixels-416x312.jpeg 416w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/480-pixels.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 416px) 100vw, 416px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The drink of champions!<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every first and third Friday of the <\/span>month you can find Peter and other musicians keeping the Irish tradition alive at the <i>Picton Arms <\/i>or the <i>Red Lion <\/i>pub. Northern Irish lass Lisa-Jane Meates, aged 27, a fashion photographer living in Newport came to the <i>Picton Arms <\/i>to enjoy the atmosphere for herself. She said the music was infectious, and that it\u2019s so nice being amongst people who are passionate about their music, but want to share it with everyone else.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not happy to sit on the sidelines but don\u2019t know how to play an instrument, not a problem!
