Newport has a rich background in indie\/rock music – but with\u00a0Peter Andre playing this Saturday at Newport\u2019s latest venue, does it mean that the\u00a0city\u00a0is changing it’s tune?<\/span><\/p>\n

TJ’s was once a legend in Newport’s live music scene – now it has become a ruin<\/p><\/div>\n

A new music venue has opened in\u00a0Clarence Place in Newport, where once the legendary nightclub <\/span>TJ\u2019s<\/span> played host to many rock bands, such as <\/span>Nirvana. <\/span>Now, <\/span>TJ\u2019s<\/span> isn\u2019t much more than a ruin. But on the other side of the road, you can see <\/span>The Neon <\/span>has opened for business.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Neon<\/span> has been renovated from the old Odeon cinema with the aim of turning it into a music hotspot. But is it breaking away from Newport\u2019s indie roots by booking a mainstream act like Peter Andre? Nathan Jennings, 29, a film director who is currently making a feature film about the history of <\/span>TJ\u2019s,<\/span> says, \u201cI think it\u2019s great that <\/span>The Neon<\/span> is now a working venue once more. It\u2019s keeping the spirit of live music open to a new generation and appealing to a much wider audience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Neon was once the Odeon cinema, which opened its doors back in 1934<\/p><\/div>\n

It seems engaging a much broader audience is a good thing. Newport itself has benefitted from its new mainstream shopping complex, <\/span>Friar\u2019s Walk<\/span>; so has <\/span>The Neon <\/span>followed in the direction that Newport seems to be going in?<\/span><\/p>\n

Shelly Byers, 39, <\/span>The Neon\u2019s <\/span>office manager, has said <\/span>The Neon<\/span> aims to cater to a variety of music genres. They put on acts like tribute bands for <\/span>Abba<\/span> and <\/span>Queen<\/span>, and rock bands like local Newport legends, Sk<\/span>indred.\u00a0She didn\u2019t feel calling <\/span>The Neon <\/span>strictly mainstream is fair; Shelly stated, \u201cWe want to bring in more rock music. <\/span>TJ\u2019s <\/span>was just a legendary place to go to, and we want to bring that sort of thing back to Clarence Place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
