{"id":37354,"date":"2017-11-11T14:44:48","date_gmt":"2017-11-11T14:44:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/?p=37354"},"modified":"2017-11-12T17:28:37","modified_gmt":"2017-11-12T17:28:37","slug":"how-food-waste-inspired-a-juice-brand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/business\/how-food-waste-inspired-a-juice-brand","title":{"rendered":"How food waste inspired a juice brand"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The growing amount of fruit and vegetable waste inspired two young entrepreneurs to open a juice company\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two young entrepreneurs set up a juice company in Cardiff to tackle the challenge of fruit and vegetable waste.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karina Sudenyte and Maciek Kacprzyk, founders of Get Wonky, were inspired to set up their business after attending the Love Food Hate Waste campaign in Cardiff last year.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37359\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 800px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-37359 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/get-wonky-1-resized.jpg\" alt=\"Tackling successfully the challenges of food waste \" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/get-wonky-1-resized.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/get-wonky-1-resized-416x312.jpg 416w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/get-wonky-1-resized-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/get-wonky-1-resized-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Get Wonky promotes their business by sampling juices (Picture courtesy of Get Wonky\u00a0on Twitter)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their aim is to produce sustainable juice drinks by using fruits which would normally be thrown away because of their irregular shape and size.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe saw the advertisements saying that every day we discard over 4m apples where retailers are not happy with the certain shape and standard of fruits and vegetables,\u201d said Maciek.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, one third of global food production gets wasted, with fruits and vegetables having the highest rates of wastage.<\/p>\n<p>Maciek said they paid farmers 70% of the market price for their produce which means growers would not need to dispose and pay for the disposal of the fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n<p>He said their main target was to help farmers grow their sales and save as many fruits as possible.<\/p>\n<p>By saving wasted produce that can be edible, they are able to produce 100% sustainable and natural juice.<\/p>\n<p>Since May this year Get Wonky saved 85 tons of fruits and vegetables.
