It is estimated that 143 deaths each year in Cardiff are the result of particulates.

Whilst Cardiff’s particulate concentrations have improved over the last decade, they are still among the worst in the country – 10 µg/m3 is considered the ‘safe’ threshold by WHO.

The city similarly has issues with nitrogen dioxide (NO2). NO2 is derived primarily from car fumes and can lower the body’s immunity to diseases like flu, whilst also causing acute respiratory diseases in children.

Due to the high levels of traffic in Cardiff, there are several areas which routinely suffer from a dangerous build-up of NO2, defined by a concentration greater than 40 µg/m3. Cardiff Council has designated these zones as AQMAs (Air Quality Management Areas) and has been focusing on improving these pockets of poor air quality, with limited success.
