{"id":41951,"date":"2018-10-22T13:00:53","date_gmt":"2018-10-22T13:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/?p=41951"},"modified":"2018-11-02T14:38:50","modified_gmt":"2018-11-02T14:38:50","slug":"a-different-kind-of-theatre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/culture\/a-different-kind-of-theatre","title":{"rendered":"A different kind of theatre"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>A Cardiff theatre is creating a new experience this autumn, combating rising prices and dwindling ticket sales<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-42498\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/giwih_main.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"698\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shermantheatre.co.uk\/homepage\/\">Sherman Theatre<\/a> is asking up-and-coming theatre companies to put their best foot forward in a new series of plays with a foodie twist starting this November.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shermantheatre.co.uk\/performance\/theatre\/shed-man\/\">Get it While it\u2019s Hot<\/a> <\/em>will see emerging theatre companies perform at the famed Cathays institution. They also promise more than just the onstage antics: viewers will also get a pie and a pint for their money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The announcement came after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uktheatre.org\/theatre-industry\/guidance-reports-and-resources\/sales-data-reports\/\">UK Theatre&#8217;s Sales Data Report<\/a>\u00a0this summer. It concluded that, despite increased prices, ticket sales declined last year. According to the report there were over a quarter of a million fewer ticket sales than in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The overall revenue in 2017, though, was greater than 2016&#8217;s. This is thanks to a \u00a33.24 average increase in ticket prices since 2013. While a success for the industry, punters are asking whether a night at the theatre is becoming unattainable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In protest, Sherman associate director David Mercatali stated: \u201cTheatre can seem elitist, but that\u2019s not the Sherman way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s certainly intended to be a less formal night at the theatre,\u201d Mercatali said, r<\/span>eferring to the affordability, casual after-work atmosphere and novel pre-theatre meal.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">November\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shed Man<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the first <em>Get it While it\u2019s Hot<\/em> production, is from Cardiff-based <a href=\"https:\/\/uktheatre.org\/theatre-industry\/guidance-reports-and-resources\/sales-data-reports\/\">Clock Tower Theatre Company<\/a>. Executive Producer and founder Steve Bennett described the partnership with the Sherman as a \u201cprivilege\u201d. He echoes Mercatali when asked about pricing issues: \u201cWe believe it\u2019s important for theatre to be as economically accessible as possible.&#8221; He said: &#8220;the price and package of <em>Get it While it\u2019s Hot<\/em> is brilliant and we hugely support it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clocktower-tc.co.uk\/52-shed-man\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shed Man\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a &#8220;dark and surreal study of human resistance&#8221; by playwright Kevin Jones. It\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will run from 13 to 17 November.
