Photo courtesy of Simon Rawlinson<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boulders climbing centre says it&#8217;s seen a rise in female climbers in recent years, with young girls making up 70% of their\u00a0development and competition squad. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michelle Bernard, Boulders administrator, has seen the number of female members grow during her three years of employment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michelle says climbing was intimidating for some, and seen as male-dominated. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now the majority of climbers in the children\u2019s classes are girls, and female competitors are proving themselves repeatedly in competitions all over the country. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zaneta Williams, a trainee instructor at Boulders in Saint Catherine&#8217;s Park, has been climbing since she was 11 years old.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_43737\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 800px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43737\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/edited-climbing-pic.jpg\" alt=\"Zaneta climbing\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/edited-climbing-pic.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/edited-climbing-pic-416x312.jpg 416w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/edited-climbing-pic-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/edited-climbing-pic-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zaneta climbs between her work sessions at Boulders.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In her experience, women don\u2019t always respond to the competitive element in sport, but once they get on a climbing wall, they\u2019re always keen to come back. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zaneta says: \u201cTypically it has been, and still is to some extent, a male-dominated sport, but in my opinion, it isn\u2019t a gendered issue.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She believes women are climbing because of strong female role models and greater accessibility, with more climbing centres and readily available equipment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some women are still concerned about social barriers within climbing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michelle says mothers often have difficulty with childcare, and insecurities about weight. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEither they can\u2019t get childcare or they think that after having a child they\u2019re too big to climb,\u201d she says. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michelle is keen to encourage mums to get together and organise timings for a parent\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/bouldersuk.com\/climbing-centre\/groups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">climbing group at the centre<\/a>. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boulders is collaborating with Letzshare, an organisation encouraging women to take part in alternative sports. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Letzshare is holding an <a href=\"http:\/\/letzshare.co.uk\/event\/womens-indoor-climbing-trial-session\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indoor climbing trial<\/a> session at Boulders on 18 November. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giorgia Rescigno, founder of Letzshare, says climbing is a highly popular activity amongst members. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simon Rawlinson, performance coach of 15 years, says: \u201cWomen may be drawn to climbing because \u2018mainstream\u2019 sports, such as football, traditionally target men. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cClimbing is a very personal sport that feels like it&#8217;s your own, regardless of gender or background.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Women are getting on the ropes in Cardiff, but could climbing be the great equaliser in the world of sport?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":176,"featured_media":43483,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[13],"tags":[102,50,10699],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v14.9 -
