Cardiff’s notorious ‘Chippy Lane’ is home to several takeaways<\/p><\/div>\n

Cardiff was accused last month<\/a> of having an alarming number of takeaway restaurants, but one Cardiff food stall is fighting back.<\/p>\n

The BBC\u2019s Shared Data Unit first analysed<\/a> the data provided by the Office for National Statistics<\/a>. The Independent<\/i>\u2019s sister paper, i<\/i>, then pinpointed Cardiff as a \u201ctakeaway hotspot\u201d<\/a> based on the data.<\/p>\n

Daniel Ludlow and Shane Harris are adamant, however, that the words \u2018takeaway\u2019 and \u2018unhealthy\u2019 do not have to be synonymous. They run Puro Fit Food, a takeaway stall in St David\u2019s shopping centre.<\/p>\n

A year ago they began a meal preparation service, delivering to health-conscious Cardiff customers. What surprised them was that it was not just athletes who wanted their food.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe targeted the athlete market,\u201d said Daniel, \u201cbut we found the average person wanted a healthier option too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shane says, in the near future, the majority of us will eat more healthily. \u201cA lot of people are making that change where they’re eating better food daily,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

However, the food industry is yet to catch up with changing habits. \u201cThis is why we\u2019ve started this,\u201d said Shane, \u201cwe wanted to get in early.\u201d<\/p>\n

October also saw two American chains, Denny\u2019s<\/a> and Slim Chickens<\/a>, announce restaurant openings.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Guardian\u00a0<\/i>labelled areas of Cardiff as \u201cfood deserts\u201d<\/a>, impoverished areas where it is easier to buy fast food than fresh fruit.<\/p>\n

No regular Cokes to be seen at Puro<\/p><\/div>\n

Two months ago, Puro Fit Food opened its St David\u2019s stall. \u201cThis is the first, but we\u2019re planning to branch out across the UK: London, Liverpool, Leeds,\u201d said Shane. \u201cAnd we\u2019re going to expand the meal prep side of things too, to deliver nationwide.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a former boxer, Daniel found it difficult to eat properly: \u201cI always found it hard to prep food.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat’s why I ended up eating in Nando’s everyday. There was nothing healthy available on the go.\u201d<\/p>\n
