Instead, many churches and other charitable organisations across Wales are now asking people to count up and contribute their unopened toiletries; calling for razors, shampoo and shower gels, rather than baked beans or dried pasta. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These types of collections are operating on a larger scale too. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inkinddirect.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Kind Direct,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for example, is a charity who has been operating since 1997, and over the past two decades has donated what they refer to as \u2018consumer goods\u2019 to those in need, ensuring that no usable product is wasted. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, at just the beginning of this year, Sali Hughes &#8211; who is the resident beauty columnist for The Guardian &#8211; and her colleague Jo Jones launched a project called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-pool.com\/beauty\/beauty-honestly\/2018\/7\/Sali-Hughes-and-Jo-Jones-launch-Beauty-Banks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Beauty Banks\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; a nationwide collection of toiletries and cosmetics which are sent to shelters across the country for those who cannot afford to buy them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why donate products?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When looking at the statistics about poverty in the UK, the numbers surrounding hunger are clear. In the September of this year, The Guardian published an article which claimed that 14 million people in the UK are \u2018living below the breadline\u2019, with more than half of those people having been stuck in the same cycle of poverty for over a year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trusselltrust.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Trussell Trust,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a leading charity which aims to tackle UK hunger, saw its foodbanks provide over 600,000 emergency supplies to people in crisis between April and September 2018. This was a 13% increase on the same period in 2017, and the charity suggests foodbank use is only set to rise further during the winter months as the wait for benefit payments is elongated. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This then begs the question: when so many people in this country cannot afford to eat, why are people choosing to donate a seemingly superficial product like a makeup compact? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The evidence is more substantial than you think.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cGreater earning potential\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research has suggested that access to cosmetics is not only linked to improved mental health, but connected to employability- something which the Welsh Minister for Lifelong Learning, Eluned Morgan, defines as \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gov.wales\/newsroom\/educationandskills\/2018\/new-employability-plan-to-tackle-unemployment-and-economic-inactivity\/?lang=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the most sustainable route out of poverty.\u2019<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5Ik4X0FjOCQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWomen who wore cosmetics were perceived as having greater earning potential and more prestigious jobs\u201d<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/252d\/59ee2958557f633354ae5420cd1fe944c97e.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Nash, Fieldman and Hussey, for example, it was found that women who wore cosmetics were not only believed to be healthier and more confident, but were perceived as having <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">greater earning potential<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more prestigious jobs <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by the onlookers who were evaluating them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/252d\/59ee2958557f633354ae5420cd1fe944c97e.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">similar study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that people who struggled with depression expressed \u2018enhanced self-evaluations\u2019 and participated more frequently in social activities after they had been made up with cosmetics, suggesting that the value of a beauty product extends far beyond the superficial benefit. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_47081\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 600px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-47081 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-12-at-09.12.08.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-12-at-09.12.08.png 600w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-12-at-09.12.08-424x312.png 424w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A box of toiletries ready to be sorted and dispensed to those in need, photo credit @thebeautybanks<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><b>\u201cA Fundamental tool\u201d<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, while clinical research shows clear evidence of a link between beauty products and employability, those with first hand experience of \u2018beauty banks\u2019 suggest that the correlation between access to toiletries and self esteem is undeniable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sian Elliott, a volunteer at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/magorbaptistchurch.org.uk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magor Baptist Church<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, South Wales, frequently donates toiletries and cosmetics through the UK charity <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.southwalesargus.co.uk\/news\/15621220.Founder_of__Street_Life_Sarnies__the_group_which_has_fed_hundreds_of_homeless_people_is_up_for_award\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Street Life Sarnies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and argues that while these products are often viewed as a luxury, they are also a fundamental tool for fostering a sense of wellbeing in people in poverty. This, she believes, in turn can improve the prospect of people getting into work. Sian explained, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI am aware that there are many families who need to feed and clothe themselves and when food becomes a priority, toiletries and beauty products are last on the list. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt seems incredible that some women are having to stay at home because they either can\u2019t afford or don\u2019t have access to sanitary products. This is wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI like to donate beauty products, as I think it is important for women\u2019s self esteem and mental health. I feel better when I put my mascara on and smell nice, and I want all other women to be able to feel the same.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shannon Chittendon, 18, from Cardiff, similarly suggested that beauty bank resources should be considered as \u2018key essentials\u2019 after discussing her own experiences of poverty in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/av\/uk-wales-46141025\/hygiene-poverty-make-up-makes-me-strong\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent short film by the BBC.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Shannon explained that access to makeup reversed the negative impact that poverty had on her self esteem and allowed her to partake in society, saying: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt can help me go out, it can help me socialise, it can help me be a better person. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWithout makeup, I couldn&#8217;t present myself to society. I couldn&#8217;t show a strong individual, because I felt so low about my appearance.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Makeup, Shannon explained, allowed her to reach her potential socially, and gain the strength to become an active member in society. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what does this all suggest? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a trip to your local supermarket leaves you viewing the donations that are ready to be sent to the foodbanks, the concept of a beauty product can seem like a superficial and unessential luxury. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, both research and first hand experience indicates that access to these products not only lifts the self esteem of those in need, but improves employability prospects. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This, at a time when five percent of the Welsh population<a href=\"https:\/\/gov.wales\/newsroom\/educationandskills\/2018\/new-employability-plan-to-tackle-unemployment-and-economic-inactivity\/?lang=en\"> are unemployed<\/a>, and a great 24.3 percent are \u2018economically inactive\u2019, suggests that toiletries and cosmetics are not simply a luxury, but a valuable political tool. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When millions are living below the breadline, what value can a beauty product hold?
