He and his dog eat some.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Real food has become a luxury<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organic produce can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnavigator.com\/Article\/2016\/01\/28\/UK-shoppers-pay-89-more-for-organic-food-survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cost <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three times more than non-organic. Some families even struggle to afford the latter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wales has a particular <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk\/documents\/SN07096\/SN07096.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">problem<\/span><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2018\/oct\/12\/more-than-a-million-uk-residents-live-in-food-deserts-says-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFood deserts\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are poorer areas where newsagents and takeaways dominate the market, making it difficult to find fresh produce. Cardiff\u2019s are some of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/uk-food-deserts-12-million-people-too-far-from-supermarkets-to-get-cheap-fresh-food-11523391\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> worst<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have been deficiency-related infant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2016\/jan\/22\/concerns-raised-about-boy-who-died-of-scurvy-a-year-before-his-death-leaked-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deaths<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children are reminded to eat their five-a-day, but meat rarely enters the conversation. Yet non-organic meat, full of antibiotics and hormones, presents greater health problems than non-organic fruit and vegetables.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, price hikes for organic meat are usually substantially greater than those for organic fruit and vegetables.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meat has been demonised since the growth of veganism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Touted as a healthy, ethical and environmentally sound alternative to the omnivore diet, veganism too can lead to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/europe\/baby-dies-diet-parents-convicted-lucas-dendermonde-belgium-malnutrition-dehydration-a7790916.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deadly deficiencies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health-wise, a herbivorous diet is difficult. To replace lost iron, zinc, calcium, omega-3 fatty acids, and B and D vitamins, vegans typically take <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/news\/medical-practice\/most-multivitamins-and-supplements-are-waste-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scientifically questionable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supplements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why the recently proposed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/nov\/06\/taxing-red-meat-would-save-many-lives-research-shows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">red meat tax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is concerning for poorer families.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople are very naive. When I say I&#8217;m going pigeon shooting, I ask if people would like to try some. They say \u2018no.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University of Oxford and the International Food Policy Research Institute conducted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/news\/food-and-diet\/could-red-and-processed-meat-tax-save-thousands-lives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">widely discussed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> research on the benefits of such a tax.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet eating meat is not a bad habit to be given up, like tobacco. For some &#8211; like anemics &#8211; it is nutritional gold.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Real meat<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So if meat is both healthy and unhealthy, how to mitigate the unwanted side effects? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enter wild game meat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These animals are as free-range as it gets, wild from birth to death. When shot, properly hunted animals die more humanely than any factory-farmed animal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mick iterates, \u201cPeople are very naive. When I say I&#8217;m going pigeon shooting, I ask if people would like to try some. The animal is not eaten.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deer die quickly, shot by an undetected hunter, and are eaten.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/ipsos-mori\/en-uk\/attitudes-hunting-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poll data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2% more Britons agree with the former.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now compare the 87% who disagree with hunting deer, to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.comparethemarket.com\/car-insurance\/content\/cars-against-humanity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who are reportedly vegetarian or vegan. It leaves 66% of the country who eat meat, yet disagree with hunting deer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General misinformation and cartoons like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bambi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have created the idea that only certain animals are suitable for food. Cows, yes; horses, no. Pigs, why not? Rabbits, definitely not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This has created a society who eat caged animals before wild ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, because Britain has no large predators, deer overpopulate, cause 74,000 yearly road accidents, and starve. Even the British Deer Society agree with culling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/deer-culling-in-britain-facts-and-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">350,000 deer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are culled each year,\u201d says <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Countryfile<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What happens to the meat?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estimates vary, but a lot either goes to waste, or is bought by foreign restaurants. Recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hfv.co.uk\/can-the-uk-venison-market-keep-up-with-the-growing-demand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">talk <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of a growing venison market refers mostly to farmed venison.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_47420\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 800px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-47420\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Feature-image-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Feature-image-5.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Feature-image-5-416x312.jpg 416w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Feature-image-5-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Feature-image-5-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Supermarkets are almost entirely devoid of wild game meat<\/p><\/div>\n<h5><strong>So why are we not all eating wild game?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nature cannot provide enough wild game to match current meat consumption. The 350,000 deer culled do not match the two million cows slaughtered annually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But is there even a tenth as much venison in supermarkets as there is beef? Is partridge <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ever <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">available outside of high-end restaurants and butchers?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey eat pigeon in France,\u201d says Mick. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> realise that it\u2019s good to eat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the world has no problem with game. It is a British complex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, it is a British middle- and working-class complex.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>The law<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider the image of a British hunter versus an American hunter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only one wears tweed and rides a horse. This is because of British law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most difficult part of shooting in Britain, says Mick, is finding somewhere to shoot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By law, hunting must take place on private land, with the permission of the landowner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unsurprisingly, shooting squirrels in your back garden will earn you a visit from the local bobby and odd looks from the neighbours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So you or a friend must own a vast portion of land. The only alternative: guided hunts. A law change is unlikely, and without that what options do people have?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow can they?\u201d he asks. \u201cYou can&#8217;t just go on farmers&#8217; land.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He admits, \u201cIt\u2019s a difficult situation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the law were to change, there would be stumbling blocks like gun control and wildlife populations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, real food should not be a rich man\u2019s luxury.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thomas of BGA describes the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecountryfoodtrust.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Country Food Trust<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cShoots donate their game to food banks,\u201d he explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They aim to feed 75,000 people this winter, and have various <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecountryfoodtrust.org\/how-to-help\/#become-supporter-anchor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">donation <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">options. One of their partners is the Salvation Army Cardiff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Country Food Trust may not empower poorer people to hunt their own food, but it is a start.
