What do the people of Cardiff think?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"980\" height=\"635\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/vox-popp-header.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/vox-popp-header.jpg 980w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/vox-popp-header-140x91.jpg 140w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/vox-popp-header-480x312.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/vox-popp-header-768x498.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/vox-popp-header-100x65.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 980px) 100vw, 980px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Matt Hancock, the health secretary for England <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-politics-49878167\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">said<\/a> that he was looking into making vaccinations compulsory for all children. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, a spokesperson for the Welsh Government told the BBC that compulsory vaccination is not something that is being considered in Wales. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BBC<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-politics-49878167\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"> reported<\/a> that the rate of vaccination in Wales fell just short of the 95% target.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There has been a sharp rise in the number of mumps cases this year. WalesOnline <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/wales-news\/public-health-wales-investigates-mumps-17105796\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">reported<\/a> that 28 people, as of October 16, contracted mumps in universities across Cardiff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An<a href=\"http:\/\/www.euro.who.int\/en\/media-centre\/sections\/press-releases\/2019\/measles-in-europe-record-number-of-both-sick-and-immunized\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"> investigation<\/a> conducted by the World Health Organisation (WHO) advised: \u201cMore children in the WHO European Region are being vaccinated against measles than ever before.\u201d However, WHO urged European nations to target immunisation gaps after the 2018 measles outbreak.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WHO declared in 2016 that the UK had eliminated measles. However, Public Health England (PHE) <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealthmatters.blog.gov.uk\/2019\/08\/19\/measles-in-england\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">announced<\/a> in August 2019 that the UK had lost its measles-free status.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2018 outbreak saw 82,596 cases of measles across Europe, the highest figure recorded in a decade.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to achieve herd immunity, 95% of the UK\u2019s population needs to be vaccinated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Herd immunity is achieved when a high percentage of the population is vaccinated. When this has been achieved, it is then difficult for infectious diseases to spread.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Oxford University Vaccine Knowledge Project <a href=\"http:\/\/vk.ovg.ox.ac.uk\/vk\/herd-immunity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">reported <\/a>that herd immunity is important. I think it is obviously a good thing because research will tell you,&nbsp;disease used to kill thousands. The lack of epidemics in this day and age is something to be hugely grateful for, and going back to that would be a terrible thing.
