A new petition is asking that the Welsh curriculum changes to help eradicate period taboo and teach pupils what is and isn\u2019t normal for their menstrual cycle.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The petition was created by Jade Morgan from Cardiff, who said, \u201cIt\u2019s not fair that children in Wales will not have access to the same level of information as those in England.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jade has suffered with endometriosis for 15 years, she said, \u201cAll too often, people [aren\u2019t] aware of what symptoms to look for, so we suffer in silence and delay seeking medical help. People have delayed diagnosis because they thought what they were experiencing was \u2018normal\u2019.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emma Barnett, BBC Broadcaster and journalist who has recently published a book titled &#8216;Period&#8217;, said, \u201cIt is important for it to hit the curriculum so girls and boys know what\u2019s normal and crucially, what\u2019s not. Periods need to stop being taboo for both genders.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A YouGov <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionaid.org.uk\/blog\/news\/2017\/05\/24\/1-in-4-uk-women-dont-understand-their-menstrual-cycle\">survey<\/a> found that 1 in 4 women didn&#8217;t understand their own menstrual cycle. It is estimated 1 in 10 women suffer with endometriosis which takes 7.5 years, on average, to be diagnosed.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/no-logo-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/no-logo-2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/no-logo-2-416x312.jpg 416w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/no-logo-2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/no-logo-2-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/fofysland\/34225970643\/in\/photolist-9LLoEt-9LP6a7-6gukBP-99GqaL-piLavq-cWuRaN-p4gzgY-p4iyD8-pkJNj3-p4hX7P-p4jaYB-pkL8SQ-p4iGVE-piKDzd-piJsPs-U9r3E8-piLctJ-jAV1zu-pkMEG6-pkKXTw-pkLbYj-piKQTA-p4j6vi-piKFm9-8b2CBf-pkvCMT-piKT5Q-p4hVk3-pkunsg-pkMSgD-pkvRmR-8xTLbC-pkL4SW-7CESFA-piKB5J-xfFzT1-9nqeTU\">Image<\/a> via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/36521974722@N01\/\">Carol Grilo<\/a> on Flickr <br>Menstrual well-being will be taught to all students across England from 2020 to end period taboo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The new addition to the English curriculum was welcomed by Emma Cox, CEO of Endometriosis UK, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.endometriosis-uk.org\/news\/menstrual-wellbeing-be-taught-schools-2020-37568#.XbBRCpNKjOQ\">said<\/a>, \u201cThis change will help overcome the taboo and embarrassment around periods, as well as equipping girls with the knowledge of what is and isn\u2019t normal for their menstrual cycle.\u201d They are now campaigning for the Welsh curriculum to do the same.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Endometriosis UK is a charity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.endometriosis-uk.org\/about-us\">aiming<\/a> to provide support services and reliable information for those affected by endometriosis.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They warned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.endometriosis-uk.org\/teach-periods\">that<\/a>, \u201cWithout learning about the menstrual cycle at school in a safe and controlled environment, menstrual conditions will continue to go unrecognised, marginalised and underdiagnosed.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jade <a href=\"https:\/\/www.assembly.wales\/en\/gethome\/e-petitions\/Pages\/petitiondetail.aspx?PetitionID=1579\">concluded<\/a>, \u201cTogether, we can stamp out the stigma and give children with menstrual conditions the support they deserve.
