{"id":49457,"date":"2019-11-05T13:18:39","date_gmt":"2019-11-05T13:18:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/?p=49457"},"modified":"2019-11-11T17:06:22","modified_gmt":"2019-11-11T17:06:22","slug":"swansea-to-increase-greenery-to-improve-peoples-wellbeing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/no-logo\/swansea-to-increase-greenery-to-improve-peoples-wellbeing","title":{"rendered":"Swansea to increase greenery in the city to improve people\u2019s wellbeing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3>The Welsh city wants to increase the amount of plants in the urban area to meet its target by 2044<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/noLogo_6_Kingsway2_copy_VZ.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49458\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/noLogo_6_Kingsway2_copy_VZ.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/noLogo_6_Kingsway2_copy_VZ-416x312.jpg 416w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/noLogo_6_Kingsway2_copy_VZ-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/noLogo_6_Kingsway2_copy_VZ-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption>An animation of how Swansea&#8217;s Kingsway will look in the future.<br>Photo provided by Swansea Council<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Swansea council is moving towards a greener city by increasing the percentage of vegetation in the city centre to meet their target by 2044.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The strategy was developed by Swansea council with Natural Resources Wales (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"NRW (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/naturalresources.wales\/splash?orig=%2f&amp;lang=cy\" target=\"_blank\">NRW<\/a>) and the Green Infrastructure Consultancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The strategy aims to increase Swansea city centre\u2019s greenery from 13% to 26% by 2030 and the tree canopy by 25% by 2044.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The renovations are part of a scheme to prepare Swansea for climate change, lowering the risk of flooding, bringing more biodiversity, cleaner air and water, and less CO<sub>2<\/sub>emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will also help <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Swansea (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swansea.gov.uk\/residents\" target=\"_blank\">Swansea<\/a> become a more &#8220;economically prosperous hub&#8221; said the council, by encouraging the building of green infrastructures in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, cabinet member for\u00a0investment, regeneration and tourism, said: \u201cHundreds of members of the public have fed into the creation of this exciting strategy &#8211; I thank them for their valuable input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe overwhelming message from our public engagement was that city nature is important to people; it increases their enjoyment and the time they spend in the city centre.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Martyn Evans, head of South Wales operations for NRW, added that the project will provide the opportunity to create a vibrant city, improving the wellbeing of residents and visitors, while also making a home for wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents of Swansea have commented on the strategy, stating the council should have kept the road layout as it was, adding greenery to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sian Bevan, a Swansea resident, said: \u201cThey\u2019ve dug up and replanted so much greenery over the last 10 years with their ludicrous, never-ending road layout changes. Had they left things be, we may have had mature shrubs and trees by now, and a working road system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others believe that while the changes will be an hindrance for the community,
