The competition is heating up at the Yonex Welsh Championships this year, as the event organiser has reported an increase in world-class talent entering the 2012 championships following a competition level upgrade. The 4-day championship is held at the Sport Wales National Centre in Cardiff.
The upgrade from a Series level to a Challenger level incorporates a $10,000 increase in prize money up for grabs by the contenders. There are 200 players from 25 countries, including 14 Welsh players battling it out for the winning title.
“It’s an opportunity to see some of the best players in the world, some of the top 30 will be attending so there’ll be some really good games to watch,” says Jamie Phillips, the organiser and previous Commonwealth contender.
