Public opinion divided on Wales’s 5p per bag policy.
The Welsh public have had nearly a month to digest the government’s new five pence per bag policy, introduced on the 1st October.
The policy involves retailers in Wales charging 5p for all single-use carrier bags. According to government data, “during 2009 in Wales we took home an estimated 350 million carrier bags from the major supermarkets alone.” All the money raised will go to Welsh charities.
The move, however, has not proved universally popular with the Welsh public. Although a number of consumers I spoke to were behind the scheme, the majority saw it as an unnecessary, if minor, expense.
So is the end of the carrier bag really nigh? I asked some Cardiff shoppers what they thought of the new 5p per bag policy.
