Review: La Crêperie de Claudie

When eating out in Cardiff it can be hard to find authentic and reasonably priced food. La Crêperie de Claudie (formally known as Victoria Park Crêperie) ticks both boxes

Eating out French-style in Cardiff can be authentic, tasty and cheap

It’s the age old question: do you prefer sweet or savoury food? At less than £5 for a sumptuous filled pancake and drink at La Crêperie de Claudie you can afford to sample both sweet crêpes and savoury galettes, although you’ll have trouble getting through the generous portion sizes.

Tucked away in the suburban area of Canton, it’s unassuming exterior suggests that La Crêperie is simply your average café. When inside, the laminated menus, old fashioned wall panelling and simple wooden tables and chairs add to this preconception. However, the wood burning fire, kitsch photos of Paris and French language books available for you to read compliment owner Claudie’s welcoming attitude, who greeted me at the door with a warm smile upon arrival.

Whether you have a sweet or savoury tooth, you will be spoilt for choice by the options available on the menu. I plumped for the ham, egg and cheese galette, a bottle of Orangina to maintain the French theme and a mug of tea (it was cold outside).  My order was undoubtedly a meal, not a snack: the beautifully presented galette was absolutely stuffed full of seasoned ham and cheese, with the egg cooked to my preference (still runny).

La Crêperie was bustling with a mixture of customers, with conversation drowning out the bland pop music being pumped through the speakers. Gossiping teenagers, families with young children being kept occupied by the colouring books available and elderly ladies occupied most of the tables.

While this may not be the place to go if you are after a fancy meal in a beautiful setting, if you want a reasonably priced meal  that is tasty, authentic and filling then you should add I would recommend adding making the trip to La Crêperie.

Rating: 4/5 stars

Verdict: tasty food that won’t burn a hole in your back pocket
