Hyperactive or “Retarded”: How ADHD and Autism Differ

One in every 5 Autistic children has been misdiagnosed with ADHD at least by one doctor. These are two completely different disorders that sometimes manifest in similar ways.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a biological disorder that affects one in ever four children. It’s not a psychiatric disorder, though the patients may sometimes also have certain neurological disorders like Autism Spectrum Disorder.

ADHD is commonly confused with Autism because of similar symptoms

Not only children, but some adults are also prone to have ADHD. This may be because of lack of awareness of the disorder or simply because of some biological issues. Both adults and children face difficulties in focusing and lack impulse control.

While, there are certain medications available to take a little control of ADHD, they are slightly addictive which is why psychiatrists prefer their patients to have Cognitive therapy along with the medication. This helps the sufferers have some control of their life.

Contrary to common belief, one doesn’t get over ADHD as they grow up, but it is very easy to lead a perfectly “normal” lifestyle with some concentration exercises, medicines and family support.
