An annual car free day starting from 2016 proposal passed as Cardiff Council has voted on 22 October, with a result of 41 councilors vote for the motion, only 8 against and 14 abstentions.

“Traffic free days encourage people to cycle and walk”

The idea is to have no vehicles from the River Taff in the west to past the castle up Kingsway to the Civic center, encouraging people to walk or cycle.

Cardiff Councilor Richard Cook who proposed this motion said, “Traffic free streets will allow local residents to enjoy the city center in a pollution free, peaceful, fun and family friendly way.”

He also mentioned the deterioration of Cardiff’s air quality, especially nitrogen dioxide (NO2) pollutant, which is relatively clean at the moment is also a reason to promote this motion.

“We need to take action now to stop Cardiff becoming like other cities who now ban vehicles completely on certain days to reduce air pollution.”

“Hopefully this will encourage people to demand more car free days and maybe eventually lead to less vehicles in the city center.”
