National brewer’s move into coffee industry has caused local upset
Coffee lovers have declared they feel mugged off after discovering that Brains has purchased their favourite local coffeehouse.
Coffee#1 has attracted a reputation for quality and comfort, marking itself against big-brand competitors as a Wi-Fi-free area.
While the award-winning chain has promised its character will remain the same under the new ownership, the brewery has outlined plans to expand the business.
Coffee#1 regular Isabel Pickard, says: “It’s a pity. There’s a dynamic atmosphere here with a close section of customers.”
Cardiff Bites blogger Nicola Tudor agrees, and says she feels “dismayed”.
“Not only does it have a fantastic menu, it also has a feel that is unique.
“Whilst Brains are a respected brewer, I worry that the charm and appeal of Coffee#1 will be lost.”
