The contenders:

001- Gareth Bale is thought to be one of the most talented football players in the world, currently playing for the Welsh team in the World Cup qualifiers.

 002- Leanda Cave is a triathlete who won the 2012 Ironman and Half-Ironman. She is the first woman to hold both these titles in the same year.

003- Nathan Cleverly is a boxer, most famous for his defence of the WBO light-heavyweight title both here and in the USA.

004- Mark Colbourne is a Paralympic medal-winning cyclist, claiming gold in the CD 3km Individual Pursuit, breaking two records in one day. He also won another two silver medals in the Paralympics.

005- Bridgend resident Aled-Sion Davies is a field athlete who claimed two medals at the London 2012 Paralympics, winning a bronze medal in the F42/44 shotput before claiming gold in the F42 discus.

006- Rower Tom James is most famous for being one of the coxless four who have claimed gold medals in both Beijing 2008 Olympics and London 2012.

007- The image of Jade Jones’s title winning moment is one of the most iconic shots from the London Olympics, after she won gold in the Taekwondo. Her place in this list is an acknowledgement of her skills in the martial arts.

008- Dan Lydiate played a key role as flanker for the Wales Rugby Union Team that won the Grand S3lam earlier this year. As a result of this, he was named Six Nations Player of the Tournament.

009- Josie Pearson from Hay-on-Wye broke the world record three times on her path to win gold in the F51 discus at the 2012 Paralympics.

010- As part of Team GB’s Team Pursuit quartet, Geraint Thomas successfully defended Great Britain’s title achieved in the Beijing Olympic track at London 2012, breaking the world record in the process.

This year has been fantastic for sport, and the shortlist for BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year reflects this. The nominees this year include Olympians, Paralympians, Six Nations players and many more.

 As well as the main award, there is the Team of the Year award, the Carwyn James Award for Junior Sports Personalities and the Cymru Wales Lifetime Achievement Award.

 The BBC Wales Unsung Hero 2012 award was won by Arthur Wood of Swansea Rifle Club. A BBC spokesman said: “He has devoted many thousands of hours over a long period of time to help all who attend the club.”

 The awards are to be held at the Wales Millennium Centre on 10 December. Voting will run between 3 and 8 December.
